The Swedish Championship this year was held in Gothenburg in the Valhalla arena. Malavé had a lot of medals to defend from last year and this time the club had four members ready to fight: The girls Karen, Joanna and me and the rookie Antoine who had trained about a half year karate before the Championship.
First up to fight was Karen who like the other two girls had a gold to defend. She fought really well and showed that it was no problem for her to advance into the finals on Sunday. I, too, did fight quite well, didn’t give away any extras but advanced easily to the final. Next up was Joanna who didn’t want to perform less. She was very strong on the tatami and did also move into the finals.
After the individual fights it was time for team. We were going to meet the Wadoryu-girls in the round before the finals. We were still warm after the individual fights and so it was no problem for Joanna or me to win our rounds and so we advanced into the finals in team, too.
Now we couldn’t do more than to wait until the next day, so we spent the evening with good food before going early to bed as Antoine would have to fight early in the morning.
Antoine had quite a tough opponent in the first round in Håkansson. He fought well but couldn’t hold up against Håkansson and his experience. Not many others could do so either and Håkansson advanced into the final and so Antoine had another chance to enter the tatami. He met a fairly strange fighter and his judo and rugby experiences shone through. In the end he didn’t have the possibility to make enough scoring points and lost this fight, too.
We girls had been preparing all morning for the finals and now it was time. Karen was first up on the tatami and continued as she had done in the warm up – forward like a little tank. And so it was nothing that could keep her from wining the gold this year, too. I was the next one to fight and met, as I did in the last year, too, Ahlam in the final. But this year the fight was much easier against her and I didn’t have any problems at all to win. And so I took my seventh individual senior gold at the Swedish Championship.
Last but not least the finals in team went off. We were meeting Botkyrka but after our intense finals it was no problem to keep on scoring. Both me and Joanna won our matches without severe problems and took another gold for the club!
Malavé Do ended up with FOUR gold medals!!
